I just wanted to tell you about Halo: Reach. The story of Reach occurs immediately before the evens of Halo. When you see the pillar of Autumn jumping in at the beginning of Halo: Combat Evolved it is jumping to a random point in space away from orbit of Reach so the covenant can’t track them.
Reach was to the UNSC what Pearl Harbour was to the Americans during WW2. It was a military stronghold that quite frankly nobody expected to be attacked let alone fall. During the events at reach there are several Spartans that are assigned to protect power generators on earth while a select few are sent to protect a cargo ship in orbit around Reach that contains the jump location for earth which the covenant don’t know yet. Master Chief is one of the Spartans assigned to protect the cargo ship.
This means that if the game does take place on the planet of Reach, you will not be playing as Master Chief, nor will you likely even encounter him in the game, BUT you will probably be playing as a Spartan of some kind, and will see several important characters in the Halo universe (ie. Captain Keyes, Cortana, etc.)
Master Chief and all the other Spartans were kids brought to Reach when they were 6 years old. It’s there that they were transformed into the the super soldiers known as Spartans. Read the book “The Fall of Reach” by Eric Nylund. It goes into detail about Master Cheif’s childhood, his transformation from a scared little boy into a spartan, and his personality. It’s surprising to read about his childhood. Especially since basically he has no soul and is just a generic character when you play as him in the Halo games. There was a part in the book where a soldier called him a freak and made fun of the dead Spartans. For a split second he wanted to break that soldier’s neck. Because of his training and his sens of duty, he pushed that thought aside. The book shows you a whole different side of the characters. I bet your opinion about Halo will change dramatically when you finish reading the book.
