In an attempt to get back in to comics, most of us here at HH have begun to pick up on titles both currently running and new. The Goon was a series I was introduced to in college by a roommate of mine who had a mild obsession with 1930s-ish stories. I actually met Eric Powell at Baltimore Comic Con a few years back because of this love of the series. Cool guy. I never really kept up with it much after that, and although I am starting at #36, I don’t really find myself confused by much of the goings on in the world of The Goon. Granted I had to suspend some disbelief when facing the prospect of a giant spider that makes a living helping criminals fence their stolen goods. But this is easy to understand since the world is built on humor. Almost a sense of ,”Criminal spider. Why not?”
Comedy, action, romance and strippers. If your looking for a tale to carry all of these subjects, look no further. Even if you haven’t been religiously following The Goon up until now, the story is casual enough to let you in and not leave too much bruising. The dialog tends to lead the characters to tell you most of the pertinent information for the most part but never loses pacing. All in all a great read with fantastic artwork to back it up. Personally, can’t wait to see what happens next for the brigands that inhabit the land of The Goon.
#36 drops on November 2nd. For more information, or to catch up on past releases, check out Dark Horse Comics and/or TheGoon.com
