As we say goodbye to an era, we welcome GAMERadio to the site as the new podcast! Think of this as trading a Mini Cooper for a Lamborghini. You will still hear from all of us, just in a different format. C4 brought up a good idea so that this way, we will hardly ever miss a show and everyone will be happy. Plus more people in the fold means more articles and reviews which is always a plus.

Last time I was into PC gaming, Pentium 3′s were all the rage for PC builds. I had some fun in those days with the likes of Balder’s Gate 2, No One Lives Forever, Max Payne, and even sports games like NHL 2003. After being spoiled with console gaming and a bit of complaining about not having a PC to play modern games on these days, Zero and Fuchikoma from #gamer in irc.oftc.net had enough. They both helped out by sending parts I would need to make a medium grade PC to run today’s games.

Zero sent to me 1GB of PC-5300 ram, a Sapphire ATI HD 3870 PCI-E graphics card, and a AMD Phenom 9500 quad-core processor. As for Fuchikoma, he sent me a Antec Sonata II case which included a 450w power supply. Thanks to those fine gentlemen, all I needed was a heatsink/fan and a motherboard. I settled on a no name brand heatsink which name escapes me at the moment and a Gigabyte M61PME-S2P. It’s a smaller motherboard but I was on a budget so I went with this model.

Putting it all together was fun. I love doing techie things like this but also learned of how if things go wrong, it can be a pain in the arse. I had 2 issues when building the PC and after it was built. The 1st issue was that the power button was not turning on the PC at all. I changed the wires to the motherboard every which way I could possibly do to no avail. After cursing the inanimate object with a combination of 7 words you can’t say on TV, I decided to put the wire that is for the reset switch were the power switch goes. To my surprise the damn thing booted using the reset switch. I am blaming this on Antec.

Now happy with a running PC I did the usual things you do with a new PC. I installed my operating system, did the updates, and installed my programs that I was going to need. Once things were squared away, I installed Steam to check out some game demos to see what this PC can do. Here is where issue #2 comes in. No matter what I would do the PC would crash randomly playing games. I thought it was a heat issue but my temps were normal. So then I thought it was the operating system. I was using Windows 7 RC1 and thought it was incompatible with the ATI card. So I tried Windows 7 64-bit. Still crashed. My only option left was to try Windows XP. Crashed again. I tried asking for help from my buddies and they couldn’t figure out what could be wrong. There were some suggestions on maybe it was the ram that was causing the crashes. Now I didn’t use the ram Zero sent me. Instead, I was using PC-4200 ram that was in my old P4 PC. I decided to use the ram Zero sent me and by the Gods it worked! Looking at the motherboard manual, it doesn’t say it works with PC-4200 ram. Even though it recognized it, it was unstable as all hell.

With all the crap I went through, I was finally able to game. The 1st game I played was Demigod. Really fun RTS but since I suck at that style of game I have to play on easy. I went on to play some Zombie Shooter and for $4.99, it’s a game people should buy. Isometric top down view shooter that has you running around levels gaining power-ups and new weapons killing zombies. What more do you need? I also played a few rounds of Warcraft 3 with C4 from GAMERadio. He dominated me to the point that I gave up. C4 says that I just need pratice at RTS games were as I know that I suck and no amount of practice is going to change that.

My experience so far with PC gaming is that things seem smoother and look a little better than the console. I missed the feeling of playing a FPS with a mouse and keyboard. With Steam and Impulse, the ability to download the latest games as well as older titles I missed out on is perfect. I know most people would rather have the box instead of a digital copy but I am starting to get into the whole digital distribution aspect of games. I love that I can go to any PC and sign in using my account for either service and download/install my games to play. Not sure console gaming will ever come down to doing that besides the arcade games they have now on PSN and XBLA.
